Clock build

Designed this clock in a CAD software and printed it in my 3D printer.
Everything works perfectly except the timer. Somehow it can not be sent out from PMDG software.

However when I push the ET button the time starts on the panel clock, that is why I still need it to be on the screen.
If anyone has a solution for the endurance time to be sent to an Arduino please let me know.

Happy simulator build.

Throttle update

Good day, it has been forever since I last had a post here.
Not had much time working with the sim, but in the past months I have been printing parts to a 1:1 throttle and gathered components and in the last weeks been fine tuning it.

Now it works very well and I am very happy to put that much work in printing, putting together and tuning it.

It is not 100% complete, but it works and the lables will be put in place next. However the precision in this throttle is perfect. If feels great to use, great resistans in all controls, and the resistance is adjustable as well.

When doing this kind of build only use precision electronical componets such as potentiometers, buttons and control cards to prevent problems.

I was told it is possible to program an Arduino Micro Pro card to act as a joystick, but it never turned out any good. I scrapped that idea and continued with Leobodnar Joystick card which works 100% flawless since it is intended for joystick axis.

It took a few weeks to print all parts to the throttle unit. I might update here with all parts.
In total there are about 56 printed parts, some of them take up to 36 hours to print.

The files to print this unit is available at https://www.737diysim.com/
Karl has done a wonderful job creating these parts and instructions how to build it.

Next project will be to print the FMC, and that will take a lot of time as well.

Well I am back and I am using my flight sim a lot and I enjoy every second of it since it is only getting better and better.

Fly safe!

Completed flights

Hi fellow aviators!

Sorry for my long delay in posting here, it has been a lot to do the past months.

Tonight I have achieved a milestone with my wonderful full size flight simulator. Completed the world tour taht I have planned and have now visited all countries in the world that has an airport.

And I do not mean just setting the simulator to each country. My origin has been ESOK, and then airport by airport such as ESOK-EKCH-EDDM-LGAT-HECA and so on. It has been one flight at a time until I tonight landed at FIMP. Now it is a transfer flight to ESOK over a few other countries left to complete the 2,5 circles around the world.

If you are interested to see my routes I can put it up here on a post how I have completed it, just let me know.

My regards to PMDG for making such excellent software to use with a flight simulator built like I have made it. There has been no problems with the software at all.
And now I have completed 479,8 hours of flight since my simulator was completed 2018-12-20.

There has been no problem with my setup at all. Everything is possible to control with PMDG and P3D v4.5.

The computer setup (single computer), software and scenery from ORBX has made it an adventure and very fun to fly around the world 2,5 times now.

If you want to build a full size flight simulator you should use PMDG, and trust me I am NOT paid by PMDG for saying this. But with a PMDG software you can control the entire aircraft systems without any problems at all.

Am so happy that I chose this setup and now the development of my simulator will continue. Will wait for the PMDG v3 737 and implement that into my simulator as soon as all offsets etc are final so it will work as well as the current 737-800.

Visit PMDG site to check out their software. And remember I said the PMDG 737-800 that I have used, not the latest software from them.

Visit PMDG here; PMDG

Feel free to contact me if you wonder anything and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Happy flying and enjoy your simulator!

Outside view update

Sorry for not posting much the past time, has been alot of other work that has taken time from me.
However the simulator still lives and loves to fly. So far no problems at all, which is impressing.

A few days ago I bough a new projector for my TV room and I thought I could use the old projector as the fourth outside window. Said and done, here it is

What you see here are two projectors on the co-pilot side of my flightdeck. Not too good setup but it works. That is why you see a dark spot on the right front view window, it is the new projector that is there.
But I sit at captain side the view is great and the synchronize very well and looks okay. However to get a 100% focus on a curved screen seems impossible with projectors.
Any ideas?

I will probably change the two projectors and get two more TV monitors instead, Guess that will work out better but will not get the correct flight sensation, but I don’t know. It is an expensive hobby and I will need at least 4 of 43″ Tv screens to replace what I have today (2x 32″ and two projectors).

However my GPU works great with high settings now that I have four outside view panels. It works a lot better that with three. Strange but true.

I only use 1280 x 1024 resolution for the outside view and that is fine since a GPU that can run higher resolution is way too expensive.

So far I have used this simulator to go around the world three times and still no problems. Am about to finish the world by visiting the last five countries I have not been at, then all countries with airports have had a visit from my flight simulator. And I mean that I fly in sequence with from one airport to the next, not jump to different countries using the flight planner.

For an example I go from BIKF – ENGM – EVRA – OIIE etc. I simply fly routes that connects to each other.
What I have left is Mongolia, Bhutan, Marshall islands, Mauritius, Micronesia, Tuvalu. Right now I am on my way to Mongolia, probably will arrive there tomorrow.

Feel free to e-mail me, you find the contact e-mail above.

Short update

Hi fellow friends and sim builders.
Has been a while since I last posted any updates here.

My simulator works very well and I am currently testing it out a bit more after the first trip around the world and all continents in real weather.

Right now I am going eastbound for another trip around and new airports that I have not visited so far.

All systems work very well, I have not had any problems with my software at all. The combination of PMDG, Active Sky, P3D v4.5, FSUIPC, is working very well.

The hardware works very well with a few minor updates of exchanging some potentiometers to Cermet to get more precision. But so far with over 300 hours of flight in my simulator everythig is simply amazing!

I am very happy and I am still flying and building.

Just waiting to update the outside view to a system I have not decided so far. I have a limited roof height of 205 cm and that is a little to small for projectors so I am still using TV monitors, only three however, have not been able to add the last fourth TV screen so far, but still it is completely amazing and I am very happy.

If any of you reading knows what kind of TV screens or other visual solution that would be better/cheaper I am happy for information about that.

I have seen small TV screens in stores that they use for advertising. They are not more than 40 cm high but almost 200 cm wide. Wish I knew what kind of monitors that is. It would be perfect to get a 80 cm high and 150 cm wide screen and use three of those instead, one forward and one at each side, but I guess there are no such screens on the market. So far I have not made any effort looking for them, but I guess they are extremely expensive if there are any.

Suggestions are open and all ideas are welcome.

Build and fly safe!

June 2020 update

Hi fellows,

Sorry for not writing for a long while.
Have been very busy with a lot of things with my simulator, mostly flying.

At this point I have managed to fly around the world, visiting all continents with airports, however not Antarctica, but all other contients. A total of 184 airports visited in 120 countries so far on the first east bound tour around the globe. And what an adventure it has been.

It has taken me about 284 flying hours over the past 18 months and like a miracle, not a single problem with the simulator.
Am very, very happy after this test period and now things will go on.

Small things need to be fixed, but all in all, it works like the real aircraft and I am very, very happy.

One thing I need to work with is the visual system. Today I have only three TV monitors (32″) that covers left view, front view and right view, but I miss the right front view for the co-pilot seat. Am still struggeling if it will be a total change of monitors or projectors. However my room has a limitaion. Roof height is only 210 cm. Distance from cockpit window to projector screen is about 80 cm.

TV screens have a huge disadvantage with the frames and I guess I will never get a good outside view with monitors. Has anyone of you succeded?

I do not want any frames to be visible. I want one outside view as it is in real life, but how to accomplish that without being robbed, that is the biggest question here.

Professional simulators have small projectors in their system that gives a good visual but I have not found anything how those simulators work or what kind of visual system they use.
Micro projectors, or what?

Well. I just wanted to give a short update after my long world tour with my very nice simulator that I am very, very happy with.

Happy flying!

Visual system

Good day

So far everything works well on a few hundred flights I have made around the world.

However I am still looking for a solution for the outside visual setup.
As you know I have TV monitors today, two (left and captain front view) and one projector (right view).
However I would like to have a complete 180° view. But it is hard to find projectors that will fit the room I have built in. The roof height is only 210 cm and distance I have available from front window to screen is about 50 cm at most.

To find such short throw projectors that does not cost a fortune is hard. I have spent the last year trying to solve this problem.

What do you think about this?
If you have any idea, please let me know. You can find all the dimensions of the room I have here below. What is best to use, four TV monitors or three projectors?

Throttle converting

Good day all flight sim builders.
It has been a while since my last update, sorry for that.
Has been a lot to do but now as winter is approaching I will have more time to build on my simulator.

So far it has been working absolutely flawless, which amazes me, but I am very happy.
At this point I have converted my throttle quadrant a bit as you can see on the image. Now it is more like the Boeing 737 MAX 8, which I will convert the entire flight deck to.
throttle
The fuel cut-off switches have been moved up to the throttles.
Also I was missing the horn cutout switch and the vital stab trim switches.
All are connected and work fine with the PMDG Boeing 737-800 so far.

Soon there will be an update in the software PMDG provides so that it will bring a completely new simulator with some options. Really looking forward to that.

The thing that is on the “waiting list” to complete is the main panel that will be four monitors, just like the real Boeing 737 MAX 8.

Thank you for watching.

If anyone has any questions about building a Boeing 737 simulator based on PMDG and P3D v4 just drop me an e-mail and I will help you out.

FO EFIS and windows

The spring and summer has arrived a bit that is why my simulator is not going forward that much now. A lot of time spent outdoor instead.

However today has been a rainy day sad enough but that gave me some time with my flight simulator again.

Some modifications have been made and the final parts finally arrived for the FO EFIS panel. Once that was installed and programmed I was thinking of the TVs I use as monitors, they need to be put much closer to the windows so it is more like a real window and not put up on a wall where you can see the entire TV screen and not get the flying sensation.

Well I use two 32″ TV screens and one of them fit perfectly as the left side window, no problem at all!

The other one, today my left front window, has been put much closer to the dash board and wow what a difference in flying. FD-SEB copy
Here is the aircraft located at ESOK airport, some adjustments need to be made I know but still, it is very nice to fly with this better setup.

Am thinking of two larger screens for front view and put the 32″, that now is front window to the right side window just as the left 32″ TV is on this image.

Steering tiller

Very easy home made one.
A simple single turn potentiometer is used.
To make it center, a home made “center unit” is made using two springs, one on each side of the potentiometer. On the potentiometer shaft I put a piece of wood about 5 cm long and 2mm thick. This is needed to attach the springs to it so you will get a center position of it.

I did not make a photo of that before it was built in, sorry for that. But if you want to see it, let me know and I will post it.
It is very easy to make a potentiometer to self-center.

The tiller itself is made of MDF board and painted, yes wrong color but did not have any black color left, but at this time I am just happy that it is working.

It is calibrated using FSUIPC without any problems and works great!steering-tiller
At this point I just want to try it out so the design works. And it does!
No need for complicated setup with I/O boards etc. Just connect the potentiometer to a joystick axis on your present I/O board and then calibrate it. Very simple and easy!
Setup is done in less than five minutes once it is connected to your I/O board.

Total cost to complete this less than €7, including wood, screws, potentiometers and cables.

Fly safe!
